Today was day three of full time teaching in the fifth grade classroom. I've really grown to enjoy and appreciate fifth grade-even through the awkward realization that fifth graders have Snapchat and boyfriends. What I did not realize, was how observant these fifth graders were…or not. After spending the past six Wednesdays with these children, and the past two consecutive days this week, I really thought we knew each other. Boy, was I wrong! Today, I forgot my glasses. This led the majority of my classroom to completely forget who I was. Literally. A girl came up to me and asked who I was, so I stared at her blankly and started laughing, assuming she was joking. Judging by her lack of reaction, I realized she was serious. I looked at her and said, "…it's me. Miss H…" She just said, "Oh! I didn't know who you were without glasses!" Okay, sure. It was a good laugh to get me through this hump day! But, in all seriousness, if you want your students to remember you do NOT forget your glasses, or change your hair, or change your clothes. Remember, teachers do not have a life outside of school and we're not real people.
